A month before the expiry of the deadline, around 80 percent] of bank accounts and 60 percent] of mobile connections have been linked with national biometric identifier Aadhaar, according to a senior official at UIDAI.
Aadhaar is the subject of several rulings by the Supreme Court of India. On 23 September 2013, ]the Supreme Court issued an interim order saying that “no person should suffer for not getting Aadhaar”, adding that the government cannot deny a service to a resident who does not possess Aadhaar, as it is voluntary and not mandatory.
Aadhaar Card Enrollment may soon be conferred upon Banks and Post-offices as the Unique Identification Authority of India – UIDAI in a recent meeting with Banks floated the idea of limiting the role of private agencies for Aadhaar Enrollment.
He urged the entrepreneurs to not be deterred by competition from other enrolment agencies and promised that the CSC business model will continue to evolve as more and more government departments look to take new services and schemes to villages through the network.
Taking a dig at critics of the unique identification number, the minister said the linking of Jan Dhan accounts with Aadhaar and a ]mobile number had enabled the direct transfer of subsidies into the beneficiary’s bank account. This led to savings of Rs 50,000 crore, an amount that was earlier pocketed by the middlemen.
