R.Sooraj, PhD scholar in Aerospace Engineering and member of the Ambedkar Periyar Study circle at the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, was allegedly beaten up by the students of right wing organizations for participating in beef eating fest held in the campus on Sunday in protest against the Union government’s move to ban cow slaughter. He sustained serious injuries to his eye in the attack and has been taken to Sankara Nethralaya, Nungambakkam, for treatment. The incident happened yesterday when Sooraj was having lunch with his friends in a vegetarian mess. He was surrounded by 7-8 students, and a masters student Manish began asking him questions about his involvement in the protest and was then roughened up and beaten at the back of his head. A senior IIT-M official said the leader of the gang, Manish, is an MS Ocean Engineering student and an ABVP sympathiser.   A large number of students are now protesting against the attack on the scholar and met with Dean in the morning.  Students demand administration to expel the assailants and that the medical expenses should be borne by the institution. Sooraj was one of about 80 students who gathered two days ago to discuss the Centre’s order and ate beef in protest.
